How-to
Resize a volume¶
Give a volume more space by growing it to a larger size, then grow its filesystem so the operating system can use the space.
Volumes can grow but not shrink. The extra size counts against your project's storage quota in the region. An instance's boot volume grows the same way with the CLI or OpenTofu, while the instance runs. The portal can't grow it, because it can't be detached.
Before you start¶
- A volume. The portal grows only a detached volume, with the status Available. The CLI and OpenTofu also grow an attached one while the instance runs.
- For data you can't replace, a snapshot or a backup first.
Grow the volume¶
- If the volume is attached, detach it first: Extend isn't offered for an attached volume.
- In the Breqwatr Cloud Portal (Strata), open Volumes and choose the volume, or open the menu at the end of its row.
- Choose Extend.
- Enter the New size (GB), larger than the Current size, and choose Extend.
When the status is Available again, the volume has its new size. Attach it again.
--size is the new size in GB. It works whether the volume is attached or not.
Grow the filesystem¶
The volume is now larger, but the partition and filesystem on it are still the old size. Grow them from inside the instance: see Extend a filesystem.
Check it worked¶
openstack --os-cloud <cloud-name> volume show data-volume -c sizeshows the new size.- In the instance,
lsblkon Linux, orGet-Diskin PowerShell on Windows, shows the disk at the new size.
